Ski touring offers a unique experience for mountain lovers, especially during winter, when the snow-covered peaks provide breathtaking views and an invaluable sense of freedom. Among the most sought-after destinations for enthusiasts of this sport in Italy, Monte Rosa stands out for its beauty and the numerous routes suitable for both experts and those approaching this activity for the first time.

Starting from Gabiet Refuge

The excursion began at the first light of dawn, when the snow is still compact and the conditions are ideal. After checking the equipment and verifying the weather, the route for this excursion starts from the Gabiet Refuge, located at around 2,300 metres above sea level. From there, the ascent begins with the use of skins to achieve the right grip on the snow. In this phase, the use of ski poles is crucial, as they are essential for maintaining balance and distributing physical effort more effectively. It is recommended to use an adjustable model like our Storm poles, which adapt to both the ascent and descent, and feature a rally basket to avoid obstruction during the climb.

The ascent winds through gentle slopes and steeper sections, with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. After about two hours of climbing, the Passo dei Salati, at 2,980 metres, offers the first panoramic stop to admire the landscape.

Continuing the ascent, the route crosses a more technical stretch towards Punta Indren, located at 3,260 metres. Here, the correct use of ski poles is even more important, especially when navigating tight turns and changes in gradient. The effort of the climb is rewarded by the stunning view over the Lys Valley and the Monte Rosa glacier. After a short break to catch our breath and refuel, the final stretch to the Colle del Lys, at about 4,250 metres, begins. This segment requires good physical and technical preparation, as the high altitude and steep gradient increase the difficulty. However, once the goal is reached, the view of the Matterhorn and Gran Paradiso peaks proves priceless.

Descent

After enjoying the panoramic views and taking a few photos, the long-awaited moment of the descent arrived. The first part of the route proves to be quite technical, requiring careful speed management, with constant support from the ski poles to maintain stability. As we continue, the trail becomes smoother, allowing for the full enjoyment of the adrenaline rush as we descend on fresh snow. The return to the Gabiet Refuge follows a scenic route, offering the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the alpine landscape.

To have an unforgettable ski touring experience on Monte Rosa, it is always recommended to rely on expert guides and carefully check the weather conditions before setting out. Additionally, it is crucial to carry safety equipment such as an avalanche transceiver (ARTVA), shovel, and probe, which are essential for navigating the alpine winter environment with complete safety. With the right preparation and appropriate equipment, every excursion on Monte Rosa becomes an extraordinary journey through the wonders of the alpine winter, providing emotions and unforgettable memories.
