A winter hike to the gateway of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, in one of the largest and most expansive alpine pastures in Europe: the Alpe di Siusi is a network of numerous winter hiking trails winding through huts, alpine farms, and mountain refuges.

We are in South Tyrol, between the Isarco Valley and the Gardena Valley, on a vast snow-covered plateau that can be reached by driving up from Siusi (paying attention to the regulated access times) or comfortably taking the cable car. One of the most scenic trails leads to the Molignon refuge (2,054 m): a simple yet highly rewarding route. The trailhead is located near the valley station of the Spitzbühl chairlift, just a short distance from Compaccio, the largest settlement on the plateau at 1,850 m.

We begin our walk along the trail, which follows a well-trodden snow-covered forest road that gently ascends through the woods near the ski slopes. The sun shines brightly above us, painting the sky in an intense and intoxicating shade of blue.

As we reach the first open snowfields, the iconic silhouette of the Sciliar massif emerges, featuring Monte Pez (2,563 m) and the unmistakable Punta Santner (2,424 m). In this area, the trail is not particularly busy, allowing us to fully embrace the peaceful winter breeze that defines the day despite the bright sunshine.

Leaving the Sciliar behind, we continue along the path, which now approaches the busier ski slopes. Our next stops are the Spitzbühl refuge and the Laurin refuge, as we make our way deeper into the heart of the Alpe di Siusi. From here onwards, we are constantly drawn towards the imposing Dolomite massifs of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, their iconic outlines marking the boundary of the plateau.

The trail remains easy to follow throughout, even on a few optional detours through fresh snow. That’s why our PowBro winter trekking poles are essential, supporting us both uphill and downhill with their long foam grip and specially designed basket, ensuring stability and preventing them from sinking into the snow.

In the second half of the route, as we move away from the ski slopes, the rugged peaks of the Denti di Terrarossa dominate the landscape, marking the transition between the Sciliar massif and the Catinaccio Dolomite range. Amidst this breathtaking Dolomite scenery, just before reaching the refuge, we come across a small wooden hut—an ideal spot for a quick packed lunch.

In the tranquillity of the winter mountains and their stunning views, we take a moment to recharge both body and mind, closing our eyes to savour the pale winter sun and the peaceful silence surrounding us.
